Trauma

Researchers discovered that doing these things can help people with trauma feel better.

Social Support

Feeling like you have social support has been shown to help with trauma symptoms.

Meditation

Mindfulness activities, such as meditation and yoga, can greatly improve trauma symptoms. To learn how to meditate you can search for “guided mediation” on popular online video or music streaming websites or find meditation apps on mobile phone appstores.

Exercise

Aerobic exercise and lifting weights helps with trauma. Doing aerobic exercises like walking, jogging, or running 2-4 or more times a week for 20-40 minutes or more each time helps reduce trauma symptoms. Combining lifting weights for 30 minutes or longer 3 or more times a week with walking for exercise helps people heal from trauma.

Website

PTSD Coach is a free mobile app created that provides information on PTSD and its treatments, tools to track symptoms and progress, and direct links to support and resources. You can also search for “PTSD Coach Online” on the web to use the computer version of the app.

Dissociation

To reduce dissociation you can use things that produce strong and positive sensations such as strong smells when the dissociation happens (this is called “grounding” and lots of people online post ideas for grounding for trauma).

Some things that work for some patients include essential oils and stress balls.

Looking at comforting pictures of the place where you are with writing on them that says things like “I am safe” and “I am in (location where you are)” that you can repeat to yourself when you dissociate can also help.
